Capstan & Broadside shine with Set It Off in Columbia

Earlier in the year, pop-rock band Set It Off announced a 13 date tour including Broadside, Capstan & Mike's Dead as support. This past Thursday, the tour hit The Senate in Columbia, South Carolina. It was very clear from the start that this was an 'off date' as things began rocky from the get go. With no start or door times on the flyer, a good amount of fans looked to the Facebook event page, which gave a vague time of 6:30pm. This being a pretty early time, one thought it would be safe to assume this was the time of the doors, but roughly 30 minutes after most civilians were getting off work, the doors to the venue started to open. A member of Broadside took the stage to announce that Mike's Dead would not be performing due to either illness or injury. Luckily, I had a friend from out of town who arrived hours early for the M&G update me with all the details. I rushed to the venue right before Capstan began.

It is unclear if Mike's Dead is continuing the tour or not, I would recommend checking their socials for updates.

Capstan

Florida post-hardcore outfit Capstan is known for their genre-blending soundscapes, and incredible live shows. I have actually seen this band before, but, only partially. The last time I was set to see this band was their previous tour, which stopped in Greensboro, North Carolina. On this tour, they played as a 4 piece instead of the full 5; and on the date I saw them, Joe apparently got a nasty case of vertigo to the point he couldn't perform. Seeing them as a 3 piece vs full band was night and day, even tough the former performance was good, the latter was that much better. With all 5 members ready to go, they absolutely killed the show. The sound was on point and in my personal opinion, came extremely close to sounding just as good as the studio recordings. They played most of their hits & the crowd overall enjoyed it. You could forsure tell there were select members of the audience who weren't really there for the breakdowns, but with Set It Off headlining, thats to be expected. Its also always nice to see people that you know come to a show to see one or two specific bands open their minds & ears to a different genre than the one they originally intended to see.

Broadside

2010's pop-rock scene legends Broadside took the stage next. I think this band should be on the level of a State Champs or a The Story So Far. They have so many good songs, have been consistently good for so long, and are such lovable humans, I truly do not understand how this band is not way bigger than they are. Millions & millions of streams, extensive touring history, it seems like they should be headlining every tour they are on, but alas, the industry is not so. I hope that one day this band gets the scene recognition I personally feel they deserve. They have proven that 'Coffee Talk' wasn't just a one hit wonder, and that they are truly great songwriters & musicians, releasing great new music ever since. The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the set, clearly. How could you not? With frontman Oliver Baxxter cracking jokes & just being the overall funny and relatable person he is, the rest of the band going back and forth with him in the most lighthearted way, interacting with fans between songs & also really digging deep with just being truly honest about who they are and how they feel. As someone who has been to way too many shows, I have a pretty good radar when bands are just killing time between songs, and also ones that give speeches(you know, the ones that usually emotionally leverage themselves behind whatever topic is currently trending, leaving a bad taste in your mouth as you thought you were going to a concert, not a political rally). Broadside doesn't do any of that because they don't need to, they are intrinsically genuine people and it truly shows in their performance. Always high energy, this band is always amazing live, and i feel lucky any chance I get to witness them.
